Quality Foods ensures employee pays permanent premium of $ 2 an hour – Vancouver Island Free Daily

Vancouver Island grocery chain shares its company-wide success.

Quality Foods announced Monday, January 25 at its annual general meeting that a wage premium of $ 2 per hour, implemented during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, is now a permanent increase for all employees.

The company first implemented the increase on March 13, 2020 for all 13 locations and was one of the first companies to do so.

Quality Foods president and co-founder Noel Hayward said the increase has already been extended twice; first until the end of April, then again in May until the end of 2020.

“It’s a pretty stressful and anxious time for everyone in the retail business. And our people have been great this year. And we thought it was the right decision. This pandemic is not going away for the moment. So we think the best thing to do is to make it permanent, ”said Hayward.

He said that since it seems that the restaurant industry is suffering and people are buying more food from grocery stores to prepare it at home, business has been good in this regard for QF, which helped to enable the salary bonus.

All department store managers also received incentive bonuses.

Hayward said Quality Foods was an early adapter to many pandemic precautions that are now widely used, such as plexiglass shields, AEGIS Microbe Shield on checkout conveyor belts, and the use of far UVC light for disinfect shopping carts.

“Take care of your employees the best you can,” said Hayward. “Take care of your customers as best you can and take care of the community as best you can. “
